Skullcandy Hesh 2 Wireless Review To Buy or Not to Buy
Back again for another headphone review. This time we’ll be taking a look at the Skullcandy Hesh 2 Wireless headphones. Skullcandy is known for making products that most people can afford and at a far better-than-expected quality for the price.
Skullcandy Hesh 2 Wireless Review
I started out using the wireless feature. As is the case with most wireless headphones, at least that I’ve tried, the volume of the music can only go so high. The first thing that stuck out to me was the bass. Unfortunately, I think they’re still working on the wireless feature for headphones in general.
In my eyes, wireless headphones offer more when it comes to convenience and versatility than they do sound quality.
That being said, unless you’re really a snob about the sound of your music, the Hesh 2’s give you exactly what they promise.
Next Up: The Wired Connection
After listening to a couple of songs by Trizz, I turned the wireless function off and plugged the good old-fashioned cable in.
As was expected, immediately the quality of sound improved. I could feel the bass vibrating around my ears and there was an instant clarity that stuck out.
Button Layout and Design Features
Another great feature that the Hesh 2’s come with is some conveniently placed volume control buttons and power buttons. Skullcandy made the buttons large enough that you don’t have to take the headphones off of your head to double-check which button does what.
Super Easy To Navigate
After you’ve taken a look at the headphones before slapping them on your head, it’s pretty easy to navigate just by touch.
The volume control buttons feature a plus and a minus sign, simple enough that even a blind person could function these headphones. It feels almost like rubber braille.
Also on the right side is the power and Bluetooth activation buttons.
The Friend In Your Ear
When you turn the headphones without the chord being plugged in, a “power up” sound plays letting you know that the headphones are on. It almost sounds like a spaceship taking off headed towards Mars, where we all might end up one day…
When you push the power/ Bluetooth button again, a nice robotic female voice will tell you that the device is pairing.
Using The Wireless Bluetooth Function
Another feature I find useful is that if you’re listening to music using the wired connection, you won’t have to worry about draining the battery at all. The only time the battery is being used is when you play music over the Bluetooth connection.
The Hesh 2 Wireless comes with the standard USB charging cable that will allow you to play music, watch Netflix, etc. for up to 15 hours after a full charge. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Microphone, Volume Control, and More
Also, these headphones have a built-in mic located on the top left side of the chord. This allows you to answer phone calls, switch songs, and pause and play the current song.
Another minor feature that I wasn’t that big a fan of is the size of the left and right earphones. They stick out on either side a little bit more than I would prefer. This isn’t really a big deal, no pun intended, it’s a personal preference based on other products I have used/reviewed.
Using A Headphone Amplifier vs. Listening Without
Once I plugged the Hesh 2’s into my FiiO A3 connected to my iPod Classic, it took the sound to the next level.
With the enhanced bass, you would never guess that these headphones are under $100. I’m thoroughly impressed with both the noise-cancelling capabilities and the sound quality.
I really wish you could hear the difference for yourself but there’s no way for me to show you that through your computer screen, unfortunately.
Hip-Hop sounds great, especially when these headphones are paired with the amplifier. Some good headphones, good songs with heavy bass, and a headphone amplifier go a long way.
Listeners on a Budget
One plus about buying a cheaper pair of headphones is that you can then purchase additional equipment on top of that to enhance the experience. If you spend $500 on one pair of headphones all you get is the headphones.
On the flip side, if you pay under $100 for a pair of headphones and also get a portable amplifier for around $60, you end up spending almost a third of the price for triple the enjoyment.
One last feature to note is that these also come with the standard nylon drawstring carrying case. They do have hard cases available here but are not included.
Highly Recommended For The Budget Audiophile
I really can’t recommend these enough, not only if you’re an audiophile on a budget, but especially if you’re a casual listener that wants to take a step in the right direction towards sonic bliss.
Everyone can enjoy their favorite songs but with the right equipment, it makes you wish you could go back and re-experience them for the first time again.
The good news is that YOU CAN. That’s exactly what happens once you get the perfect setup and find your personal sweet spot.
You basically ARE hearing your favorite song for the first time again. You will start to hear parts and little details that you never picked up on before. IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.

Hey Greg,

Thanks for tuning in,

Looks like a great product for a decent price, you mention it being bulky? is it overly heavy if you plan on using it for a while? I tend to listen to music on the train?
I also didn’t realise there was a difference in the sound quality using wireless compared to the cable, thanks for the heads up. Will definitely be checking that out when using headphones.
thanks
Hey John,
So in this case by “bulky” I mean as far as how far they stick out to the sides when wearing them. I’m judging this based off comparing other pairs such as the Beats Solo HD’s or the V-Moda XS On-ears which are both a little more sleek but also more pricey.
I didn’t notice the weight once while using these, they would work perfectly fine for use on the train!
Thanks for stopping by, I hope I’ve answered your question. 🙂
