Beyerdynamic has been a family owned company since it’s inception in 1924, which means they keep a careful eye on all of their operations and also usually means they take pride in a higher quality product.

I’ll be giving you a full review of the Beyerdynamic DT 1350 on-ear headphones. If I had to use one word to describe them it would be CLARITY.

Beyerdynamic DT1350 – On-Ear Headphones Review

I have to admit when I took these out of their black case I was a little bit skeptical. That’s why they say don’t judge a book by its cover. Now that I’ve had some time to use them I realize I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I also now see why they are heralded as the perfect headphone for DJs, musicians, and those looking to make the perfect mix on a rough track.

If you enjoy being fully engrossed in your listening/mixing sessions via the nuances of a track pulling you in, you’ll love these. Let’s take a look at the technical specs before we dive into the full review.

Sound Quality – Balance Is Key

The logical place to start is with the sound quality. Do these cans live up to their name, or is it all hype? Keep reading to find out.

The balance between bass, mids, and the highs is amazing. With certain headphones, the snare and/or high hats pierce through the rest of the song and forces you to lower the volume.

The bass isn’t too overpowering but doesn’t lack either. Certain songs off of Heavy Metal King’s latest album have small details that I am hearing only now after the fourth or fifth listen through using these headphones. You will probably find yourself re-discovering nuanced production on older songs that you thought you knew like the back of your hand.

You’ll Hear Every Piece of the Song

These are perfect for those of you who want to hear EVERY SOUND no matter how quiet, or nuanced. Sounds that might go unnoticed when using other headphones can’t be missed.

How Loud Do You Like to Listen?

If you’re like me, you want to have the ability to play music as loud as is still comfortable to listen to. With some headphones, certain aspects of the song will be too overpowering to turn all the way up to where you like it.

Beyerdynamic DT 1350 On-Ear Headphones

With the DT 1350s – I have yet to run into this problem. It feels like they force you to be fully engaged with the music you’re listening to.

This could especially come in handy when you’re using music to hit a meditative state of being. Since it demands your attention this way, it’ll also bring you into the present which is part of the purpose behind certain meditations.

Tesla Technology – Custom Transducers Advantages

The DT1350 model features something called Tesla Technology. It’s basically an internal system that allows you to listen louder (and across a wider range of frequencies) with less distortion. This is done through the use of “sound transducers” and operate similarly to our ears.

The audio waves (mp3, cd, tape) are transmitted as electrical signals which then travel through your headphones and are then converted into a signal that our brain responds to via the sound transducers.

Beyerdynamic DT1350 On-Ear Headphones

This technology is also why you will hear over and over again about the pristine balance these headphones have to offer. Now that we’ve covered the sound quality, let’s see how comfortable they are – or if they are at all.

Comfort – For Longer Listening Sessions

Since these are a supra-aural (aka on-ear) model you will have to take comfort during long listening sessions into account. (Sometimes the on-ear design tends to start causing discomfort after an hour or two.)

Luckily, these cans didn’t cause much (if any at all) discomfort after wearing them for a few hours. The Soft-Skin ear pads are lightweight and pretty breathable. The material covering the ear pads is extremely soft and comfortable. You shouldn’t have any issues with them heating up too much and causing your ears to sweat.

Adjustable Headband

The split headband that sits on top of your head fits like a glove. Either I have a perfectly shaped head for these headphones or the designers had maximum comfort in mind. (My guess is the latter.)

Although it’s a thin band I think this adds to the comfort. A lot of over/on-ears have a thicker headband which adds weight, therefore adding slight discomfort during longer sessions sometimes. These take a different approach and it definitely pays off.  The semi-adjustable headband was a new experience but is definitely worth the personalized fit.

While most headphones have a fixed band, these allow you to widen the top piece as pictured above.

…or keep it closed like a more traditional pair.

Supra-aural Build Design – 90 Degree Earcup Swivel

They also have a 90-degree ear cup swivel feature that allows you to isolate the right and left feeds. This would come in handy if you’re an audio engineer or DJ.

Beyerdynamic DT 1350 On-Ear Headphones

It’s also a convenient feature for more casual listeners simply for the fact that you can have one ear covered, still listening, and one ear uncovered so you can listen to someone talking to you or hear your baby crying while you’re listening in a different room.

Side by Side Comparison – How Do They Hold Up?

Compared to the Beats Solo HDs they have a more comfortable feel despite being on your ears as opposed to over or inside. They don’t feel heavy on my head at all, in fact, they’re more lightweight than I would’ve expected.

Sometimes it’s fun to throw on a pair of headphones to drown everything out even if you’re not fully focused on exploring an album.

These aren’t built for that purpose. These were designed to enhance every piece of audio that goes into the creation of a song. They will elevate your sonic experience on a different level.

*Bonus Breakdown – Performance When Paired With a Portable Amp

These headphones are unlike any other pair of cans I’ve listened to. When paired with the FiiO A3 – your audio will be even further enhanced (as is expected).

As mentioned above, these are very well-balanced and with a portable amplifier, it doesn’t add any distortion to the sound. It only amplifies the well-balanced sound signature.

Although it’s not completely necessary to add a portable amp to your personal audio setup – it can really make a big difference.

Our Verdict – Highly Rated and Highly Recommended

I would recommend these to anyone who looks for a super balanced listening experience. They are highly rated on Amazon – as well as in the world of audiophiles. The general consensus is that these offer a great solution to anyone seeking a more detailed, smooth audio experience.

The comfortable build design, supra-aural ear cups, 90° swivel ear cups, and nearly flawless audio playback make these a must-have for audiophiles or someone interested in exploring hi-res audio.

This headphone covers every area that I look for in a headphone and with all these features it being over $100 is surprising or expensive at all.

Without the 90 degree Earcup swivel listening through one ear is always difficult unless you have in-ear headphones.

Some parts of the music being overpowering is also a big concern for me so that’s another plus not to mention being able to hear everything in the music clearly.

The final thing that really matters to me is how comfortable headphones are because I listen for hours at a time so these sound great, I can’t buy a new pair right now but I’m definitely bookmarking this page

From your review these sound like an awesome pair of headphones.

I am into music production have have over a half dozen pair of headphones. I like that these are still on the smaller size so they are light weight look very comfortable and from what your review says are put together right.

The quality headphones I have are on the larger size and make me hot after awhile. These maybe just what I am looking for.

They are going on the Christmas list. Last year I got a pair of headphones too. Why change a tradition.

      Thanks!

        Hi Dave,

These are pretty highly rated for music production so I think these would be perfect for you.

It’s definitely a nice feature that they are more lightweight but still perform at a high level. I haven’t experienced any issues with excessive heat while wearing the DT 1350s for long periods of time so I think you’ll be fine in that respect.

These will be an awesome Christmas present, it’s always nice to treat yourself and keep up the tradition. 🙂

Thank YOU for stopping by and taking the time to read this review,

        Happy headphone hunting,

Wow, this sounds like an awesome head phone even if it is over $100. I would choose unique sounding quality any day over a lesser brand. If we love music then we all love quality crystal sound right?

I can almost imagine the sounds from an action movie or sounds from the jungle life enhanced. I think I just sold myself on this item 🙂

        Hey Allen,

You do have a point there, crystalline sound quality is always the best.

Looks like you’re doing my job for me then 🙂 I hope you enjoy these Beyerdynamics, please make sure to use the links here if you decide to go for it. They are having a discount on Amazon right now that you could take advantage of.

        Thanks for tuning in,

        Dom
