Best In-Ear Headphones Of 2020
We all have those days where it doesn’t really make sense to bring our bulky cans with us. We like having the option to bring something much more compact and portable. Just because you can’t bring your favorite over-ears, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice a quality performance!
Whether you’re looking for a pair to use during your workouts, on the plane, hiking, or just plain everyday use – we think you’ll enjoy our Top 10 picks! Each one was individually handpicked based on our quality performance criteria. Keep reading our guide below to see how we selected the Best In Ear Headphones of 2019!
Best In Ear Headphones
Here’s How We Handpicked Each One!
Before we get into the actual list, you probably want to know how we handpicked each model that made the cut. There are a few features that are absolutely essential when it comes to choosing the right pair (especially for this style).
Here are the 5 most important features we used to select each model:
- Build: Weight, Durability, & Water/Sweat-Resistance
- Comfort: Wearing Design & Minimal Inner Ear Fatigue
- Connectivity: Wired vs. Wireless
- Sonic Performance: What Do They Sound Like?
- Bonus Features: Noise Cancellation, Noise Isolation, TouchPad Controls, etc.
Although the 5 criteria listed above might seem like obvious features to consider, here’s a brief guide explaining why each of them is so important. When it comes to choosing the right pair for you and your needs, it’s usually best to leave no stone unturned!
Build Quality & Water/Sweat-Resistance
Although all of the earphones featured in this roundup have a high-quality build, there are some that perform better than others in this area. There are also a few that are more ideal for working out (or other active uses) since they have a water/sweat-resistant design.
We made sure to clearly state which models are the most ideal for active use (and which ones are not). Most of the models we included are also fairly lightweight, which definitely contributes to their overall wearing comfort.
Wearing Design & Extended Comfort
As you know, if your earbuds sound great but aren’t comfortable enough to wear for longer than a single hour – they usually end up causing more stress than they’re worth. A long-lasting and comfortable wearing design is absolutely essential when it comes to choosing the right pair – especially when they’re worn by inserting them directly into your ear canal.
This is why most people prefer that they receive a wide variety of ear tips to experiment with. While a single set may fit a large percentage of listeners, some of us have a harder time finding the perfect fit. We carefully considered not only basic comfort but the quality (and quantity) of ear tips you’ll receive for each individual model.
Wired vs. Wireless Connectivity
Many people (maybe including yourself) only prefer using wireless electronics. That being said, there are still quite a few people who prefer the standard wired connection. In many cases, wireless earphones aren’t quite able to compete with wired models in terms of sound quality.
This is why the wireless models we chose to include, offer a much better-than-average Bluetooth performance. Although wireless ‘phones can be more convenient, it’s also important to consider things like battery life and any issues with latency (or lag).
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
As we briefly mentioned above, sonic performance plays a big role in the debate over wired vs. wireless preference. We tend to agree that wired ‘phones still sound noticeably better in most cases. No matter which style you prefer, we made sure to highlight each of the most important playback qualities for each of the Top 10 models.
If you’re one of the many people who are willing to possibly sacrifice things like convenience in return for better audio quality, you will definitely appreciate our detailed breakdowns. We also did our best to describe how each pair sounds so that you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
Bonus Features
Last, but not least, are the bonus features. Since many of the wired models don’t necessarily offer very many bonus features – this section mainly applies to the wireless models. We carefully considered features like ambient awareness that allow you to hear your surroundings or a quick charge feature for better portability.
Although some of the features may seem unnecessary at first, you never know when they’ll come in handy! Now that you know how we selected each model, you can refer to the list below to see which ones made the cut!
Feel free to use any of the links below to jump ahead and look at the first one that jumps off the page! On the other hand, if you’re someone who likes to start what they finish – you can browse the entire list from top to bottom!

1. Bose SoundTrue Ultra
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Compatible With: Apple and Android devices
- Frequency Response: Not specified by manufacturer
- Includes: Carrying case, shirt clip, and 3 sizes of StayHear+ ear tips
- Colors Available: Charcoal or Frost
- Weight: 0.64 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
The SoundTrue Ultra features an all-plastic build design that’s extremely lightweight. They are available in two different color options and are fully compatible with both Apple and Android devices. Their StayHear Ultra ear tips feature an ear hook design that looks very similar to many other sports tips.
Unfortunately, they do not have an official waterproof rating which makes them less ideal for active use. The tips themselves are made of a very soft silicone material that sits comfortably in your ears. They are extremely comfortable to wear and do not cause any major ear fatigue during extended listening sessions.
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
They use a wired connection with a somewhat unique ‘t-split’ cable design. The in-line remote and built-in microphone are featured on the right side of the cable, which makes answering calls quick and convenient.
The actual functions used to control your music are also very intuitive and easy to use. At the bottom of the cable, there is a straight 3.5 mm connector. That way, you can keep your phone in your pocket without having to worry about the cable accidentally disconnecting in the middle of your song!
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
These ‘buds have a strong mid-range performance. Their impressive vocal clarity is very clearly highlighted across a wide range of tracks. Compared to past models from Bose, they have a slightly laid-back bass response.
If you consider yourself a bass-head, you’ll probably want to keep scrolling. When listening to alternative, rock or classical music, the treble has a pretty smooth tone that doesn’t distort or produce any sharp peaks.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you’re someone who enjoys premium comfort and very stylish design, the Bose SoundTrue Ultra would be a great fit! They are most ideal for portable or casual use at home. You can easily keep them in for hours at a time, and never have to worry about recharging any batteries!
2. SoundMagic E10
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Driver Type: Neodymium dynamic
- Frequency Response: 15 – 22,000 Hz
- Impedance: 16 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 1002 dB at 1 kHz/mW
- Weight: 0.32 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
Both earpiece housings on the E10 feature an all-metal build. They have logo branding on the backs of each housing that adds to their unique appearance. You will also receive 6 different silicone ear tip sizes, which is helpful for finding the right fit.
They also weigh considerably less than most of the other earphones featured here, which definitely adds to their overall wearing comfort. Even after more than 3 hours of continuous listening, the ear tips do not cause any excessive discomfort or fatigue.
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
They use a wired connection with a non-detachable and partially-braided cable. The tangle-free cable has a glossy black finish that feels very durable and lightweight. There aren’t any in-line controls or a built-in microphone for taking calls.
Unless you’re planning on using these strictly for portable listening, the lack of an in-line mic may be a slight downside. Then again, that’s one of the main reasons they tend to excel in other areas!
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
One of the first things you’ll notice when you plug these in and press play, is very distinct and dynamic bass response. Their level of detail separation and clarity (across a wide range of testing tracks) is pretty impressive.
They also have a well-rounded mid-range vocal performance that’s matched by a crisp treble response. They do not need to be paired with an external amp which makes them absolutely ideal for portable listening. When listening to higher volumes, there isn’t any audible distortion at all.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you need an affordable option under $40 that also sounds like it’s worth at least twice as much, the SoundMagic E10 would be a great fit! Although they don’t have the most durable build, their sonic performance more than makes up for the difference.
3. Beats X Wireless
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wireless
- Wireless Range: Up to 50 ft.
- Battery Life: Up to 8 hours on a single charge
- Frequency Response: Not specified by manufacturer
- Includes: Neoprene carrying case, lightning to USB-A cable, 4 ear tip sizes, & removable wingtips
- Weight: 11.2 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
The Beats X features an around-the-neck wearing design that’s both lightweight and comfortable. Both earpieces stay securely in place whether you’re jogging or walking at a normal pace. Although you can take them to the gym, they do not have an official IPX waterproof rating.
If you decide to wear them during active use, keep in mind that you won’t want to expose them to very much moisture. This is why they usually perform better for casual use while walking around or wearing at home. It’s also worth noting that the 4 included ear tips do a pretty good job at blocking outside noise.
Wireless Connectivity & Cable Design
These are completely wireless and have a built-in Apple W1 chip. The W1 chip allows for extremely fast Bluetooth pairing, as well as access to their impressive quick charge feature. They also have an impressive Bluetooth range that allows you to wander up to 50 feet away from your paired device.
Their proprietary FlexForm flat cable features an in-line remote as well as 2 separate battery units. You can take calls and control the volume, skip tracks, pause/play your music, and access Google Assistant or Siri.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
This may come as a surprise, but these have a noticeably-improved and fairly well-balanced response that’s a great step in the right direction. (This is true despite Beats’ reputation for producing an over-emphasized low-end response in the past.)
The bass has a nice presence that’s not overpowering or muddy. In the mid to upper range, vocals sound much more clear. The only minor downside is that the treble can become slightly sharp at higher volumes. For the most part, it’s fairly warm and dynamic which allows you to comfortably listen to most genres.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you enjoy a sleek wireless design and a well-rounded everyday listening experience, the Beats X Wireless is definitely worth considering! You can not only listen for up to 8 hours at a time but can also utilize the quick charge feature for an additional 2 hours (on a 5-minute charge). A strong Bluetooth performance is one of their stand-out features – making them the most ideal for everyday listening!
4. 1More Triple Driver
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Driver Type: 2 Balanced Armature + 1 Dynamic (in each earbud)
- Frequency Response: 20 – 40,000 Hz
- Impedance: 32 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 99 dB
- Included Ear Tips: 9 different ear tip sizes (6 silicone, 3 memory foam)
- Weight: 0.63 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
As you can see in the picture above, these have a very unique housing design. Their brushed aluminium finish and premium packaging makes for a very enjoyable unboxing experience. You’ll receive 9 different ear tips in both memory foam and silicone.
Their angled ear fittings ensure that they stay securely in place whether you’re walking or listening at home. They aren’t ideal for active use since they do not have a water or sweat-resistant rating. They are almost as lightweight as the SoundMagic E10, but with a much more solid and premium build.
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
They use the standard wired connection and feature a Kevlar-woven fabric cable. The cables that run directly into each earpiece are made of a grooved rubber material that does cause some minor cable noise when they brush against your shirt.
They also have an in-line remote on the right side with small notches on either side of the middle button. You can use it to control various functions including volume up/down, pause/play, and for skipping tracks. The built-in microphone is also conveniently-placed and works fairly well for taking calls.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
They have a very dynamic sound profile with clear and accurate bass response. It’s nearly impossible to find another pair (at this price point) that can compete with their crisp detail separation and vocal imaging.
Although they aren’t flat or analytical by any means, their sonic performance leaves very little to be desired. If you’re an audiophile, you may prefer the Etymotic Research ER4XR instead. On the other hand, if you’re looking for your first introduction to hi-res audio – you should definitely consider these!
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you’re looking for unmatched audio quality (at this price point) and very comfortable listening experience, we highly recommend the 1More Triple Driver! Their angled ear fittings, paired with some memory foam tips makes for an unforgettable listening experience!
5. Sennheiser HD1 Free
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wireless (via Bluetooth 4.2)
- Wireless Range: Up to 80 ft.
- Battery Life: Up to 6 hours on a single charge
- Driver Type: Dynamic
- Frequency Response: 15 – 22,000 Hz
- Includes: Micro USB charging cable & 4 different sized ear tips
- Weight: 0.59 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
The HD1 Free features a similar around-the-neck wearing design that the Beats X utilize. That being said, these ‘buds weigh an ounce or two less. Their lightweight build definitely contributes to their comfortable fit. (Especially since they don’t have a plastic or rubber piece that sits on the back of your neck).
There are a few reasons why they aren’t exactly ideal for active use. For one, they aren’t water or sweat-resistant. Two, the semi-awkward cable design tends to be pretty distracting. These usually perform better for casual use that doesn’t involve excessive movement.
Wireless Connectivity & Cable Design
They are completely wireless and can be used for up to 6 hours on a single charge. Although they are more lightweight than some, the somewhat bulky in-line remote tends to move around when you’re moving faster than regular walking speed.
The in-line controls are fairly intuitive and their Bluetooth 4.2 supports two hi-res wireless codecs – AAC and aptX. Does it make a difference in terms of sound quality?
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
The AAC codec replicates CD quality over a Bluetooth connection. This adds more ‘flair’ to their punchy and tight bass response. The vocal presentation and mid-range instrumentation are very clear.
While they don’t necessarily produce ultra hi-res playback, they perform very well for listening to a wide range of genres. Either way, they are definitely a step above any stock wireless earbuds included with your smartphone.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you’re looking for a great pair of wireless ‘buds for everyday use, we think you’ll really enjoy the Sennheiser HD1 Free! Although they’re usually a little bit overpriced in our opinion, you never know when they’ll go on sale!
6. 1More Quad Driver
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Driver Type: 1 Carbon dynamic + 3 balanced armature (per each earpiece)
- Frequency Response: 20 – 40,000 Hz
- Impedance: 32 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 99 dB
- Includes: 1/4″ adapter, leather travelling case, 9 pairs of ear tips, airplane adapter, & shirt clip
- Weight: 0.65 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
While the Quad Driver does look similar to the Triple Driver, there are a few clear differences worth pointing out. As you can see in the picture above, they have barrel-shaped tapered housings that look much more futuristic and sleek.
The acoustic chambers that house all 4 individual drivers have a brushed aluminium finish that’s as durable as it is pleasing to look at. They are also very lightweight and comfortable for extended listening. There aren’t really any major flaws worth mentioning in terms of build or wearing comfort.
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
They use a standard wired connection with a right angle 3.5 mm connector. The in-line remote functions are fully compatible with Apple and Android devices, as well as most laptops, tablets, and PCs. Is the cable the same as the Triple Driver?
The twisted oxygen-free cable is tangle-resistant and doesn’t cause any cable noise if it happens to brush against your shirt. Unlike the previous model, the cable uses the same material all the way up and into both earpieces. The control buttons on the in-line remote are circular and have a very satisfying tactile response.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
They have sonic performance that’s both unique and divisive. Their sound profile is obviously v-shaped no matter what track you’re listening to. Despite the low and high-frequency emphasis, the bass response isn’t overpowering or cluttered.
The detail separation across the board is definitely one of their strong suits. Although they do tend to favor the sub and mid-bass response – they never fail to provide an extremely engaging listening experience.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you like to be ahead of the curve and are looking for an extremely detailed v-shaped sound signature, we recommend you try the 1More Quad Driver! Where they may slightly lack in terms of sonic balance, their lightweight wearing design and included accessories make them a great option for listeners of all types.
7. Bose QuietComfort 20
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Features: Acoustic noise-cancelling technology
- Battery Life: Up to 8 hours on a single charge
- Driver Type: Not specified by manufacturer
- Impedance: 32 Ohms
- Includes: 3 StayHear+ ear tips (S, M, and L)
- Colors Available: Black or White
- Weight: 1.55 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
Although the QC 20 and SoundTrue Ultra share some vague similarities, the QC 20 are significantly heavier and slightly less portable. That being said, they’re a great travel companion, especially if you fly or use public transportation very often.
They offer the same level of comfort, with StayHear+ ear tips that feel almost weightless in your ears. They also come in two different versions – one for Android, and one for Apple devices. They are available in both black and white color schemes and have a look that says “We’re strictly here for business.”
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
They utilize a wired connection to power the Acoustic Noise Cancelling feature. They also require you to recharge the battery from time to time in order to activate/deactivate the ANC. The ANC performance is far above-average and blocks virtually all outside noise (even in the loudest environments). They also have an Aware Mode that you can use to allow ambient noise.
The control module used to control the features mentioned above is located near the base of the cable. The battery usually lasts around 16 hours on a single charge. Although you can keep listening once it dies, you will notice a pretty dramatic decrease in overall sound quality.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
Unfortunately, these ‘buds score the lowest in terms of sonic performance. More energy and focus was put towards blocking outside noise than it was creating a mind-blowing listening experience. That being said, you can expect a fairly accurate bass response and slightly elevated treble.
The mid-range usually tends to take a back seat and isn’t extremely detailed or forward. Overall, they sound pretty average, considering they are one of the more expensive models on our list.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you’re looking for a high-quality pair of noise-cancelling earphones, the Bose QuietComfort 20 is easily one of the best options at this price point! Despite them slightly lacking in terms of audio quality, their ANC and Ambient Mode make up for much of the difference. When your main priority is to block outside noise – there aren’t many others that can compete!
8. V Moda Zn
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Driver Type: Dynamic
- Frequency Response: 2 – 25,000 Hz
- Impedance: 16 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 105 dB @ 1 kHz
- Includes: Active Flex sport ear hooks, carrying pouch + 8 pairs of BLISS ear tips
- Weight: 0.73 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
The Zn features an all-metal build design and military-level durability. They are extremely stylish and impossible to miss. Despite being the most durable pair of ‘phones available – they manage to provide long-lasting comfort that can be enjoyed for both active and casual use.
They don’t have an official waterproof rating, but the build materials used to construct the housings and cable will keep the inner components safe during heavier usage. On top of the 8 included ear tips, you will also receive a pair of ActiveFlex ear hooks. They make the already-secure fit almost completely immovable (in the best way possible).
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
They use the standard wired connection and are available in a 1-button and 3-button version. That gives you the option to save a little extra weight if you plan on using them primarily for active use. The cable itself is also 20 times as durable as the industry standard.
The tangle-free Diamondback cable is non-detachable and Kevlar-reinforced. The small branded housing about 2/3 of the way up the cable doesn’t bounce around too much or add any considerable extra weight. Both the 1 and 3-button versions are compatible with Apple and Android devices.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
If you’ve never listened to a pair of V Moda ‘phones before, you should be very pleasantly surprised. They have a bass response that’s nicely extended with more depth than most in-ears. Vocals in the mid-range are very detailed and smooth.
On most tracks, the treble response has a similarly detailed and extended tonal quality. Much like the Quad Driver, their sonic performance is extremely engaging and forces you to pay close attention to each element on a track.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you enjoy an extremely exciting listening experience that’s equally appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use, we highly recommend the V Moda Zn! While audiophile purists may not prefer the extended low or high end, most listeners can appreciate the durability and overall performance these have to offer!
9. Beoplay E8
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: True Wireless
- Battery Life: Up to 4.25 hours on a single charge
- Driver Type: Electro-dynamic
- Frequency Response: 20 – 20,000 Hz
- Colors Available: Black or Gray
- Includes: 4 silicone ear tips + 1 pair of Comply Sport Pro 200-Series memory foam tips
- Also Includes: Portable charging/carrying case + micro USB to USB charging cable
- Weight: 0.46 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
The B&O E8 have a very simple and straightforward build that adds to their lightweight and comfy wearing design. Each earpiece is made of polymer plastic and rubber. The combination minimizes the risk of them accidentally slipping out of your hands. They aren’t fully waterproof but can withstand some very light exposure to water or sweat.
You will also receive a portable charging and carrying case. The outer portion is made of genuine leather while the inside features a similar polymer plastic. There are mini LED lights on the inside letting you know when they’re fully charged.
True Wireless Connectivity & Touch Pad Controls
These are the only true wireless model on our Top 10. If you’re not familiar with the term, it basically means exactly what it suggests – no cables at all. Using the genuine leather charging case, each earpiece has a battery life of up to 4.25 hours. You can also charge them twice more, for a grand total of around 12 hours.
There is a touchpad system on the back on both earpieces that you’ll use to control your music. You can reach up and activate Transparency Mode or skip tracks and adjust the volume. The Transparency Mode is especially convenient to use when you don’t want to completely remove one (or both) earpieces during a quick conversation.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
You will have the option to download a free EQ app with the E8, but most people enjoy the way they sound right out of the box. The bass response is fairly accurate and has a decent amount of depth. There is a pretty noticeable emphasis on vocals in the mid-range – which is great for listening to most styles of music.
The treble, on the other hand tends to become slightly cluttered on heavily-produced EDM or other overly-aggressive tracks. Overall, their sonic performance isn’t necessarily audiophile-grade, but is usually adequate for most casual listening.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you’re tired of untangling cables and think you’ll enjoy using a touchpad to control every aspect of your music, the Beoplay E8 would be a great choice! They have a fairly decent battery life that you can further extend using the leather charging case. Above all else, there aren’t very many models that can compete when it comes to completely cable-free everyday listening!
10. Etymotic Research ER4XR
Basic Features & Technical Specs:
- Connectivity: Wired
- Driver Type: Single balanced armature
- Frequency Response: 20 – 16,000 Hz
- Impedance: 45 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 98 dB @ 1 kHz
- Includes: 5 pairs of ear tips, 1/4″ adapter, shirt clip, carrying case, & filter removal kit
- Weight: 0.82 ounces
Build Quality & Wearing Comfort
The ER4XR have a pretty minimal build design that puts very little emphasis on making a bold fashion statement. They are deep insertion IEMs, which means they’ll sit further inside your ear canal than you may be used to. For that exact reason, there is an earwax filter inside each earpiece.
Once you start to notice a major decline in performance, it’s usually time to replace the filter. For first-time users, the deep insertion style takes one or two listens until they fully adjust. Once you’re used to the deeper fit, they become extremely comfortable (even to the point of being able to wear them in bed).
Wired Connectivity & Cable Design
These are the only IEMs featured here that have a detachable cable. The partially-braided cable with MMCX connectors can be replaced it if it wears down over time. It does not feature any in-line controls or a built-in microphone. Since these were designed with a specific purpose in mind, they aren’t even remotely waterproof.
They perform better in a casual, studio, or critical listening environment where the music is the most important area of focus. These are another pair of ‘we mean business’ earphones that place more emphasis on sonic performance than bonus features or a flashy design.
Sonic Performance – What Do They Sound Like?
These were custom-tuned to reproduce audio that sounds as close to the live experience as possible. There isn’t any obvious attempt to over or under-represent the lows, mids, or highs. That being said, they do have a slightly extended bass response (compared to the previous version that was purely analytical).
Their authentic playback and raw acoustic clarity make them an ideal choice for any serious listener. They are also extremely easy to drive and do not need to be paired with an external amp. In order to experience their impressively-cohesive sound profile – you can plug them directly into your smartphone or DAP.
Are They The Right Pick For You?
If you prefer the premium audio playback that a deep insertion fit has to offer, the Etymotic Research ER4XR are a pretty incredible bargain! They’ve been compared to other IEMs that cost at least twice as much and were able to easily compete (if not surpass) expectations!
